John Lewis sales drop 2.4%

Fashion sales outperformed the rest of John Lewis as overall sales dropped by 2.4% to £48.15 million over the week to August 23.

A tough start to the week hit John Lewis as "uncertainty with the economy and the weather" prevailed despite a 3% uplift in trade on the Saturday before bank holiday.

Despite the downturn, the fashion category was up 5.9% as both John Lewis own brand and branded womenswear had a good week, as did women's shoes, up a strong 6% on the year.

Aberdeen led the way for shops, with sales up 5%. Oxford Street, Edinburgh and Trafford Centre stores all beat last year's sales up 8.3%, 12.1% and 1% respectively .

"Elsewhere, trade was more difficult, with continued uncertainty both in the economy and the weather," said John Lewis head of supply chain and administration Andy Banks.

He added: "The supply chain continues to perform well, with product moving quickly and smoothly. Merchandisers have done a great job managing stocks, with product availability significantly ahead of last year on a lower stock position."
