John Lewis sales edge up 1.6%

Sales at John Lewis rose 1.6% to £50.3 million for the week ended August 30.

John Lewis fashion sales rose 3.2% for the week with kidswear performing well and kid's shoes outperforming the same week last year.

John Lewis said a strong start to the week and the promising back-to-school trade boosted sales.

Jill Little merchandise director at John Lewis added: "With a good start to the week we looked set for a more substantial increase, until a sunny Saturday encouraged customers to enjoy the weather, meaning the week ended just up on last year. This was an improving position, with stronger trade than the previous two weeks and six branches achieving an increase on last year."

Stores in Cambridge, Liverpool and Brent Cross were up on budget added Little.

Yesterday John Lewis opened its first store in Leicester in the Highcross centre. Little said: "As we look to week six, the attention is all on Leicester, our third new shop to open in 10 months."
