John Lewis sales fall 4.8%

John Lewis saw sales fall back 4.8% in the week ended October 11 but fashion sales posted a 4% increase.

John Lewis said that the 4.8% fall was "respectable" given the current climate and that it continued to draw confidence from the ongoing success of its seasonal assortments and growing market share, especially on fashion.

Nat Wakeley, John Lewis director of selling operations region A, said: "Overall, childrenswear saw the best of the buying group performances last week, with girlswear continuing to show tremendous double digit growth. Next in line were womenswear, buoyed by strong fashion accessories, and beauty trade."

The best performing John Lewis branch was Oxford Street, which only recorded a 3% sales fall. The worst performing were High Wycombe, down 18.7%; Cribbs Causeway down 17.6%; Milton Keynes, down 16.2%.
