John Lewis sales get pre-Christmas boost

Sales at John Lewis rose 7% last week as the department store bounced back from a slump in high street spending ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.

Sales rose to £71 million for the week to Saturday November 17 - the retailers' strongest weeks' sales to date this season. The improved sales followed a dip in performance, when sales rose just 2.3% in the 15 weeks to November 10, compared to a 15.8% increase for the same period last year.

The 26-store chain opened an expanded shop in Cambridge last week, and launched a television advertising campaign earlier this month.
