John Lewis sales pick up as temperatures drop

Fashion sales at John Lewis were up 12.5% for the week to October 11 as shoppers stocked up on autumn clothes as the cold weather set in.

Kidswear and babywear were up 21% for the week while umbrellas and sunglasses also sold well.

Total sales increased by 12.9% to £80.59m, while online sales increased by 31.2% for the week.

John Lewis director of store development Tim Harrison said:

“This week has seen a solid increase in sales as the cooler weather starts to have a positive impact across all directorates. The start of the week was particularly strong, with sales softening slightly as we approached the weekend. The milder weather does look to be finally turning and both bricks and clicks are prepared for the seasonal assortment. As the early schools break for half term this week we begin the climb to Christmas.”
