John Lewis sales up 10%

Sales at John Lewis stores rose 10% for the week to Saturday 24, as the retailer brushed aside fears of a Christmas slowdown.

Cold weather and shoppers buying for the party season helped sales top £78 million at the department store business last week. The Oxford Street store had its first £1m week day this year, a week earlier than last year.

Director of retail operations Patrick Lewis said: "The cold crisp weather this week has certainly created a festive buzz in our shops and we are very encouraged by these results which show an excellent increase on strong figures from both last week and last year. It is clear that big name brands are important to shoppers in 2007, with gift-buyers already heading to audio and toys, and party goers heading for the fashion floors or creating their own bespoke outfits with some help from our haberdashery department."
