John Lewis sales up thanks to strong womenswear performance

A strong sales week came on the back of more autumnal weather.

Sales at John Lewis have risen 9.6% to £88m for the week to 1 October 2016. Womenswear experienced an 18.6% rise, compared with the same period last year.

Overall fashion sales for the week were up 8.6%. The store said that cooler weather had boosted interest in new-season stock, and brands such as Barbour performed well. John Lewis also said its new range, Modern Rarity had been selling well, particularly in knitwear, although it did not give exact figures.

However, overall fashion sales for the nine weeks to 1 October are still down 1.2% compared with last year, although overall sales were up 1.9%.

This week, the new John Lewis store in Chelmsford opened – it is the brand’s first store in Essex.
