John Lewis scores strong Christmas like-for-likes

John Lewis outperformed the market this Christmas, scoring like-for-like sales growth of 6.2% for the five weeks to January 5.

Total sales at the John Lewis department stores were up 7.6% for the Christmas and post-Christmas Sale period.

John Lewis Partnership chairman Charlie Mayfield said: "I'm pleased with the performance of the divisions, particularly in the context of the demanding market conditions we faced during this important trading period. Looking ahead, we expect the trading environment to continue to be very challenging this year."

Waitrose, the premium supermarket owned by the John lewis Partnership, also recorded a strong Christmas. Like-for-like sales at Waitrose for the five week period were up 4.1% excluding petrol and total sales were ahead 6.1% excluding petrol.
