Fashion sales edged down 0.4% for the week to 19 November, however womenswear sales were up 9.5% year on year.

Maggie Porteous, director of shop trade at John Lewis, said: “With five weeks to go to Christmas people are beginning to decorate their homes but seem to be waiting for the Black Friday deals to do much of their gift buying.

“Through our commitment to ’never knowingly undersold’ and our own offers, we will have thousands of price reductions in place, giving our customers the best value for money on the high street.”
