John Lewis trade picks up

Sales at John Lewis saw a uplift for the first half of this week, boosted by Christmas gifts.

Highlights at John Lewis for Sunday to Wednesday inclusive were sales of women's cashmere, which were up 15% on last year and men's fleece lined gloves, which saw an uplift of 17% on last year.

John Lewis director of selling operations Nat Wakely said: "Trade so far this week has been much stronger than we have seen in the last three weeks with a noticeable uplift in Christmas gift purchasing. There has also been a clear increase in big ticket purchases since the VAT reduction which we had fully actioned by last Friday."

John Lewis will report on the full week's sales on Monday.
