Clothing sales at John Lewis jumped 27.7% in the week to January 4, helping the department store group deliver overall sales growth of 23.6%.
Customers snapped up clothing across all categories, with every buying group reporting “significant” double-digit increases and own brand fashion performing particularly well.
John Lewis said new store space performed particularly well with stores in Tamworth, Newbury, Swindon, Poole, Leicester and Stratford City all at around or above the 30% mark with customers enjoying its clearance Sales.
Online sales growth proved to continue, with sales up 34.4% on the same week a year ago.
John Lewis retail rervices director Barry Matheson said: “A lot of hard work has been done throughout the year and, as we move towards the final few weeks of the trading year, our attention needs to focus on the remaining clearance period and the vital task of stocktaking.”
