John Lewis weekly fashion sales drop

John Lewis fashion sales fell 8% year-on-year for the week to 19 May.

Despite this overall decline, women’s accessories grew 2.7% and womenswear own-brand fashion sales rose 7%.

Total sales dropped 6.3% for the week, but were up 1.1% for the 16 weeks to 19 May. Despite good sales at the start of the week, the retailer said weekend sales were affected by the hot weather and customers turning their attention to the weekend’s royal wedding celebrations.

John Lewis said it experienced extremely strong demand for royal wedding memorabilia and partyware from customers and tourists who celebrated the occasion.
