Fashion sales are up 4% on last year for the 21 weeks to date, compared with 3% for electricals and home technology and 2.1% for home products.

Total sales increased 2.3% to £129.2m for the week. The retailer said the figure was supressed as the first day of clearance in its stores moved into the current week this year, starting on December 28 rather than December 27 in 2014.

Online sales were up 25% on last year and there was a record volume of customers using the John Lewis app.

John Lewis started its clearance Sale online at 5pm on Christmas Eve, with orders up 17.7% for the first hour compared to the same period last year. Stores reopened on December 27.

“This was a busy week for us,” said managing director Andy Street. “Customers were shopping right until the last moment before Christmas, helped by the extension of our click-and-collect service to Christmas Eve.”
