Kurt Geiger to enter kids' market

Kurt Geiger has announced plans to compete in the kids’ footwear market for the first time with a multi- and own-brand offering.

The footwear and accessories retailer said it has signed up more than 20 new brands and will launch the new venture when it takes over the kids’ footwear departments at both Harrods and Selfridges in the summer. It already operates the adult footwear departments for both of these retailers.

Kurt Geiger’s debut own-brand junior collection will launch in autumn 15 and will roll out initially in flagship stores and department stores. Sizes will cover new born babies and go up to 11-year-old children and the range will include mini versions of existing adult styles as well as new designs.

Kurt Geiger also plans to launch a dedicated multi-brand and own-brand kids’ website at the same time.

Kurt Geiger chief executive Neil Clifford said: “We are used to working incredibly closely with the buying and management teams in both Harrods and Selfridges to ensure their ladies and men’s shoe offer is entirely reflective of their fashion business, and it’s natural to extend our partnership into their children’s shoe assortment.

“Multi-branded footwear buying and retailing is what we do every day, and it’s exciting for us to be challenged by a whole new category.” 

Kurt Geiger was acquired by Clifford as part of a management buyout, backed by US investment firm Sycamore Partners, in April 2014.

In its Christmas trading update the retailer posted an increase of 14% in like-for-like sales as well as a 35% rise in online transactions, accounting for £50 million in total online sales.
