Total sales were up 1.3% to £72.9m for the week.

Christine Kasoulis, buying director of home at John Lewis, said: “Fashion sales were up with the warmer weather forecast for this week, presumably driving a late surge in summer pieces across the directorate. Beauty counters also had a strong week, with sales finishing up 5.1%.”

  • How can you use 'surge' then state 'edged up'?
