Declining footfall hits shopping centres hardest

Footfall across the UK for the week beginning 3 February fell by 1.7% compared with the same week in 2018.

The latest figures from Springboard show that overall week-on-week figures grew by 2%.

Shopping centres suffered the worst, dropping 2.8% year-on-year, followed by high streets which fell by 1.7%. 

Retail parks saw a drop of 0.4% compared to 2018.

Only Ireland and London showed steady performances, growing 1.2% and 1.9% respectively year-on-year.

The worst-hit areas were Scotland, down 7.9% and the East Midlands and South West – both showing a decrease of 5.3%.
