Fashion sales hit ‘hardest’

Fashion sales took the “hardest hit” last week, as total like-for-likes were down 4% year on year for the week to 12 May.

It marks the second consecutive week of negative results for the sector.

In-store fashion sales fell 11.6% last week, as poor weather and rough winds impacted footfall.

High street footfall dropped 8.4%, shopping centres were down 5.2% and retail parks dropped 2.5%, the BDO High Street Sales Tracker indicated.

Both lifestyle and homeware registered positive like-for-likes, up 3% and 6.1% respectively.

Total like-for-like sales across all sectors fell 1.3% compared with the same week last year.

In-store sales were down 7.7%, while non-store sales jumped 18.4%.
