Fashion sales up for 10th consecutive week

Fashion sales were up for the 10th consecutive week for the week to 28 April, as total fashion like-for-like sales rose by 0.76% year-on-year.

In-store fashion purchases were down 3.18%. Total sales across all categories increased by 0.58% year on year despite in-store sales falling by 4.17% compared with the same week last year.

Accountancy firm BDO said stores were hit the hardest as a result of the combination of bad weather, bank holiday Monday and declining footfall.

Shopper numbers on the high street fell by 3.3% for the week, while shopping centre visitors dropped by 1.8%. Footfall to retail parks meanwhile, rose by 3.5%.
