Burberry, Guess, Inditex and H&M are among 40 fashion businesses to launch the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action today.
Leading fashion brands, retailers, suppliers and others, including a major shipping company, have combined with the support of UN Climate Change to address the climate impact of the industry across its entire value chain.
The charter defines solutions including the decarbonisation of the production phase, the use of climate friendly and sustainable materials, low-carbon transport and circular business models.
Signatories have set an initial target to reduce their aggregate greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. Measures such as phasing out coal-fired boilers and other sources of coal-fired heat and power generation in their own companies and direct suppliers from 2025 will help achieve this goal.
The founding signatories of the charter include Adidas, Burberry, Esprit, Guess, Gap, Hugo Boss, H&M Group, Inditex, Kering Group, Levi Strauss & Co., Mammut Sports Group AG, Puma, Schoeller Textiles, Peek Performance, Salomon, Skunkfunk, SLN Moda, Stella McCartney, Sympatex Technologies, Target and Tropic Knits.
Supporting organisations of the charter include The Business for Social Responsibility, Sustainable Apparel Coalition, China National Textile and Apparel Council, China Textile Information Center, Global Fashion Agenda, GOTS, Sustainable Apparel Coalition, Sustainable Fashion Academy and the Outdoor Industry Association and Textile Exchange.
CEO of Puma, Bjørn Gulden, said: “We are aware that more than 90% of Puma’s carbon footprint is being generated in shared supply chains. If we want to reduce carbon emissions in our supply chains, we need to work together without industry peers.”
The charter is still open for other companies to join.
