House of Fraser fulfilment centre to close

House of Fraser’s distribution centre in Wellingborough, run by XPO Logistics, will close this spring after months of uncertainty, leaving up to 280 workers without jobs.

The news comes after over 600 workers in Wellingborough were put at formal risk of redundancy in August following a stand-off with House of Fraser over an outstanding payment.

When the department store entered administration, it owed the logistics provider £30m, but when Mike Ashley bought the company shortly after it left the new owner with no obligation to pay the debt.

In an effort to force repayment, XPO stopped processing orders and both the Wellingborough and Milton Keynes branches temporarily shut.

Eventually, Wellingborough reopened. However, the Milton Keynes site close closed in the autumn, making around 360 staff redundant.

XPO Logistics and House of Fraser have been contacted for comment.
