Exclusive: John Smedley reveals expansion plans

Premium knitwear brand John Smedley will open two new stores in Japan as it celebrates its 235th anniversary, Drapers can reveal.

The brand will open a 2,500 sq ft standalone store in Tokyo in September, and a second 2,000 sq ft store will launch in Kyoto in February 2020.

Founded in 1784, John Smedley currently has eight stores in its Japan portfolio, and the new stores will bring this figure to 10.

John Smedley is also planning to open a knitwear museum in Derbyshire to allow British knitwear manufacturers to showcase historic equipment and products.

In the UK, John Smedley is stocked at retailers such as Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols and operates standalone stores at Brook Street, New Cavendish Street and St James’s in London, as well as a website.
