Fashion sales at John Lewis & Partners were down 2.1% year on year for the week to 4 May, despite a “strong” overall performance across the bank holiday weekend.
The retailer said fashion sales were down because it was matching competitor promotional activity last year.
Promotions across beauty and women’s accessories last week led these categories to perform “particularly well,” said operations director Bérangère Michel.
Although the cooler weather drove footfall to John Lewis stores, total sales for the week were down 2.6% year on year. Homeware took the biggest loss, at -9.1%. Electrical and home technology sales meanwhile increased by 1.7%, as new TV and fridge-freezer launches bolstered spending.
