Year-on-year fashion sales rise despite struggling high street

Fashion sales were up 1.5% year on year in April after registering positive like-for-like results in each of the four weeks.

Although in-store purchases were down 0.8%, total fashion sales increased to 3.8% last month (up from 2.3% in 2018).

This is despite a challenging market, in which bricks-and-mortar retail fell for the third consecutive month, by 0.4%.

Total non-store purchases increased 18.3% year on year and bolstered total like-for-like sales by 1.8%.

Accountancy firm BDO said the Easter bank holiday weekend and “Storm Hannah” boosted sales in the third week, but declining footfall and consumer confidence remained a hinderance throughout April.
