Launching internationally was biggest challenge, says New Look boss

New Look chief executive Anders Kristiansen has revealed moving the business away from its focus on the UK has been his biggest retailing challenge to date.

Kristiansen, a Danish national, said: “I came into a very UK-centric business, the buyers were focused on the UK market and to change that mindset was more difficult than I thought it would be.

“I had to set the agenda. The UK was no longer the focus; it was the same as all the other markets.”

Speaking at Retail Week Live in London on Thursday, Kristiansen also said that, as chief executive, he accepts the ultimate responsibility for the success of the business.

“When you’re chief executive you know what you’re signing up for. You need to treat your colleagues well and the way you run your business has to come from the heart. We speak a lot about our supply chain and ethical standards [and] we make sure our workers get proper salaries, because it’s the right thing to do.”
