Liverpool One moves into 'premier league' in retail ranking

The Liverpool One shopping development has overtaken Nottingham in Experian's retail ranking, a league table of the UK's top retail locations.

The Experian report also said that the Westfield London scheme in White City, which opens on Octoer 30, is set to enter the retail ranking at number 11, the UK's second highest ranked regional mall behind Bluewater in Kent.

Westfield's Stratford scheme, due for competition in 2018, will also be catapulted into the top 20 in the retail ranking when it opens, according to Experian.

The report added that 2008 has seen the opening of a record number of retail developments, but the new space could not have come at a more challenging time for retailers because of over-capacity.

"The combination of new schemes and dampening consumer demand has put intense pressure on retailers' margins and created over-capacity in a number of major shopping centres," said Experian's director of retail consultancy Jonathan de Mello.

The retail ranking report also said that Westfield Derby had moved up the rankings from 44th to 26th place, while the new Highcross shopping centre in Leicester had mitigated any impact the city may have felt from the Derby scheme.

Eden in High Wycombe moved into the top 50 of the retail ranking for the first time.
