Independent London department store group Morleys will open in the former BHS in Bexleyheath, south-east London, next year.
Morleys store will take over the 50,000 sq ft unit to become the anchor tenant for the Broadway Shopping Centre, along with Marks & Spencer.
It is expected to open in April 2017 and will be the group’s ninth branch. Spanning two floors, it will have a restaurant and café, as well as carrying men’s and women’s wear, beauty, home and toys.
Morleys runs eight other stores under various names, including Elys in Wimbledon, Pearsons in Enfield, Camp Hopson in Newbury, West Berkshire, and Morleys in Brixton. The Bexleyheath store will trade as a “Morleys”.
This will be the first time the Morleys group has opened a brand new store, having built the rest of its portfolio by acquiring and investing in long-established family businesses.
Most recently it acquired Camp Hopson in November 2014. The department store reopened this September following a £3m refurbishment.
For the year to January 2016, Morleys’ group sales were £109m and it made a pre-tax profit of £8.5m.
