London Fashion Week moves from Somerset House to Soho

London Fashion Week will move from Somerset House to Brewer Street car park in Soho from the spring 16 season event in September.

The British Fashion Council, which organises the event, said the new venue would provide a central fashion hub with close proximity to major retail locations including Soho, Oxford Street, Mount Street, Bond Street and Regent Street.

It will also be a “blank canvas” to allow designers and brands to create a space that reflects their identity.

The top floor will be used as a show space and the floor below for exhibitions.

“The exhibition space will be all on one floor and much easier to navigate,” said BFC chief executive Caroline Rush. “The flexible space will also be used for photography, buyer and sponsor spaces and guest registration.

“Most excitingly, we hope to be able to integrate all of the areas around Soho and the great spaces around Brewer Street so that it becomes more like we have with London Collections: Men – somewhere that is accessible, easier to get to and really feels like a central hub.”

Rush said the BFC has been in discussion with property firms Shaftesbury and Soho Estates, which operate many of the nearby properties, about the possibility of pop-up shops and presentation spaces.

She added: “We really want to engage with the retail industry that will be around us in Soho. Some of the talks we’ll be doing at London Fashion Week will be opening out to the general public as well, as we have done in the past, which will sit well.”

The Brewer Street car park is an art deco building dating back to 1929 designed by architect John James Joass. Last season the space was used for the International Fashion Showcase, which features more than 100 emerging designers from 30 countries and is the largest free and publicly accessible LFW exhibition.

London Fashion Week will take place from September 18-22. The provisional schedule will be announced on July 20.

The Topshop location for London Fashion Week has not yet been confirmed, but the BFC said they are currently in conversations with the retailer about the new location.

BFC will continue to have its offices at Somerset House.
