London indie The Mercantile expands into menswear

East London womenswear independent The Mercantile will launch into menswear this November.

The Mercantile

Menswear brands and Christmas gift ideas for men will be stocked in the basement of the 1,500 sq ft store, which is located on Lamb Street, Spitalfields. The basement will also stock a small selection of homewares and unisex brands.

The Mercantile launched in 2012, and last year was highly commended in the Best New Business category at the Drapers Independents Awards.

Its clothing offer sits “between high-level heritage and Cos”, said owner Debra McCann. Bestselling womenswear brands include Dr Denim, Rains and Baum und Pferdgarten.

She said the menswear brand mix will mirror that in womenswear, and at similar price points. Those lined up for the launch include Hawksmill Denim, Bleu de Paname, Homecore, Samsøe & Samsøe, Bellrose, Native Youth, Rains, Dr Denim, Lee and Champion.

“We currently have a unisex offer, and have so many female and male customers asking for a menswear selection, so it has been a natural evolution,” she explained.
