London retailers devastated by flooding

Retailers in Islington, north London are counting the costs after a burst water main caused severe flooding.

Six fire engines and three fire units from neighbouring boroughs were called to Upper Street yesterday morning after thousands of gallons of water gushed into properties causing hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage.

Shops, restaurants, businesses and homes were severely damaged.

In a statement, Thames Water said: “We expect our repairs to continue throughout this week and we’ll be working 24 hours a day to get the job done as quickly as possible.

“We’re supporting those people whose properties were flooded by going door-to-door and meeting them at the nearby Business Design Centre to discuss alternative accommodation for those who need it and our claims process.

“We’ll be doing all we can to make sure their needs are met. It was our pipe that burst and it’s our responsibility to put things right.”
