US department store chain Macy’s is to trial an off-price format with four new stores set to open in New York in autumn this year.
The Macy’s Backstage stores will be 30,000 sq ft on average and will offer womenswear, menswear, kidswear, footwear and accessories, as well as home products priced between 20% to 80% less than original and comparable retail prices.
‘We believe we can deliver a whole new level of value to customers who appreciate fashion and love to hunt for a bargain,’ said Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief innovation and business development officer.
‘Backstage is a new retail concept that the Macy’s team has built from scratch over the past six months. It will be an exciting shopping experience supported with compelling marketing, both traditional and mobile.’
The pilot stores will be located at Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, Queen’s Place in Elmhurst, Lake Success Shopping Center in New Hyde Park and Melville Hall in Huntington City, all in New York.
The format is similar to Nordstrom Rack, Barney’s Warehouse and Sak’s Off Fifth.
