Manchester united by its passion

Last month, the Drapers team headed north to create this week’s special Brandchester issue, which celebrates some of the creative successes that have come out of Manchester.

It’s a city ensconced with music and football heritage and it continues to spawn some of the UK’s most interesting fashion businesses, be they brands, indies or high street suppliers.

Most of them, while facing the same challenges as the rest of the market in today’s difficult climate, continue to thrive. Worthy of note were the high street suppliers. Most reported big uplifts in sales, having developed short-order and cash-and-carry operations to serve indies who are adapting their businesses to be more reactive in season. The downmarket reputation these stock houses had a few years ago has all but disappeared and their swanky new showrooms are definitely worth a look if you’re in town.

Having met some of the key players on the Manchester scene it’s clear to see that while yes, many of them “got lucky”, and were “in the right place at the right time” with the rise of terrace culture and the musical explosion of ‘Madchester’ in the 1980s and early 1990s, what really sets them apart is their passion for the industry. They are all determined entrepreneurs who feel fortunate to have landed in such a creative and lively sector. Thanks too to Manchester Fashion Network for its support.

Also this week you’ll find the entry brochure for the Drapers Awards 2010. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this prestigious event and we will be celebrating the winners in November with a new-look evening event. If you share the same traits as the Manchester set then we want to receive your entry.
