Marks and Spencer non-executive director Jan du Plessis will replace Sir David Michels when he steps down from his role of deputy chairman and senior independent director at the end of the month.
Du Plessis, who was appointed to the board as a non-executive director in 2008, will take over as senior independent director on March 1.
Michels steps down from his role at the end of the month after serving on the board since 2006. It was first announced in May last year that Michels would be leaving the retailer.
Robert Swannell, Marks & Spencer chairman, said: “On behalf of the Marks & Spencer board, I would like to thank David for his great commitment and contribution to M&S, and particularly for his leadership of the Nomination and Governance Committee and his role in ensuring a smooth succession.”
The replacement news comes amid a number of senior changes at the retailer. Last week it was announced that director of new channels Susan Aubrey-Cound was leaving after 11 years, coming just a day after it was reported that brand director Alison Jones had quit her job after less than a year in the role.
