Danish womenswear brand The Masai Clothing Company has appointed former Gerry Weber UK country manager Christian Lawaczeck as its new head of UK and Ireland.
Lawaczeck will join the Drapers Independents Award-winning brand on November 9. His predecessor, Tim Ormiston, will retire on November 13.
Lawaczeck joined mainstream German womenswear brand Gerry Weber in 2011. Before that, he was UK managing director for its rival, Basler, for about six years.
Ormiston has been Masai’s country manager for the UK and Ireland since 2006. He held the same role at IC Companys, which owns Tiger of Sweden and By Malene Birger, from 1998 to 2006.
Masai said Ormiston had been “instrumental” in establishing Masai in the UK and Ireland, where it has 370 accounts, including the Fenwick group and Browns department store in York, as well as smaller independents such as Bridge in Solihull and Shirt Sleeves in Newark, Nottinghamshire.
Masai has 12 stores in Denmark and in 2014 revealed plans to open some in the UK and Ireland by the end of this year. Lawaczeck declined to comment on the progress of these plans.
