Masai looks for first UK standalone stores

Danish womenswear brand The Masai Clothing Company is planning to open its first standalone stores in the UK, with the debut shop expected to open as early as next year.

Drapers understands the retail push could involve opening two or three stores before the end of 2015, to gain momentum and brand awareness in the market.

Possible locations for the stores, which are likely to be about 1,500 sq ft in size, include affluent market towns or suburbs across the UK, such as Guildford and Richmond in southwest London.

Masai, which already has 13 stores in Denmark and three in Sweden, has previously been put off opening shops in the UK because of the cost of rent, but feels it can no longer avoid opening in what is one of its largest markets.

The main focus for the brand will remain on wholesale, and Masai has agreed deals with its biggest stockists, such as department store Fenwick, not to open shops too close to its stores.

Masai has about 400 UK and Irish stockists and is still looking to grow this side of the business.
