Matalan flattens its buying management structure

Matalan has streamlined the structure of its management buying team and will not replace buying director Mitch Hughes.

Hughes left the value retailer in May after 10 years. In his most recent role, which he held for four years, Hughes worked to bolster the in-house design and buying team, shake up Matalan’s sourcing systems and improve the in-store experience.

Industry sources said Matalan’s heads of categories will now report directly into managing director Jason Hargreaves, “cutting out the middle man”.

Antonia Craig, currently head of buying for footwear and accessories at Shop Direct, will join Matalan at an undisclosed date to head up its womenswear department.

Craig, who has spent three years working at Shop Direct, was previously a buyer for Matalan for nine years from 1999 to 2008.

Chris Lee, who was promoted from creative director of Matalan’s own-brand sportswear label Souluxe to head up the retailer’s menswear division last month, will also report into Hargreaves. He will continue to look after Souluxe.

Lee is also creative director of menswear brand Wolsey, which is owned by the Hargreaves family. Jason Hargreaves is managing director of Matalan.

Paul Solly joined the retailer as merchandising director in March from Tesco, where he was director of home and furniture since 2013. He previously worked at Marks & Spencer for 23 years, most recently as head of merchandising for home.
