Matalan promotes internally for head of menswear

Matalan has promoted the creative director of its own-brand sportswear label Souluxe to head up its menswear division, as it prepares to introduce the category into its Oxford Street flagship.

Chris Lee is also creative director of menswear brand Wolsey, which is also owned by Matalan’s owner the Hargreaves family. He will continue to look after Souluxe and the British heritage brand as well as undertaking his new menswear responsibilities.

Lee joined the clothing and homeware retailer in December last year. Prior to that, he held various design roles including creative director of Slazenger and Dunlop licensee Microbrands One between February 2009 and January 2013. He was managing director of the JJB Sports lifestyle division for one year between 2008 and 2009.

Ian Silcock, who was formerly head of buying at the retailer, has been acting as head of menswear. He remains with the business as buying manager for menswear.

Matalan managing director Jason Hargreaves told Drapers the new 16,131 sq ft Oxford Street flagship, which opened in June, is trading “in line with expectations”.

He added that the business plans to incorporate menswear into the store from next season following demand from shoppers.
