Matalan warehouse staff accept pay rise

Workers at Matalan’s Knowsley warehouse have agreed on a final pay offer from the value retailer, after a three-and-a-half month dispute with management.

The pay package comprises a 3.17% annual pay rise, raising hourly rates to 24p above minimum wage.

The approved offer will be backdated to the start of April.

Union GMB, which represents roughly 43% of Matalan’s workforce at the warehouse and distribution centre, balloted the workers on 17 July.

A spokesperson for Matalan said: “This is the best award we have been able to make in several years.

“Matalan’s first priority has always been to act in the best interests of the whole workforce – which is why we are delighted to announce that we will be implementing the pay deal in full as soon as possible.”

The dispute arose after staff workers found out that supervisors had been given a £1,500 pay rise with an additional 2% increase.
