Meadowhall announces £50m revamp to mark 25th anniversary

Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield is set to undergo a £50m refurbishment starting later this year to mark its 25th anniversary.

The shopping centre, which first opened its doors on September 4, 1990, is one of the UK’s six ‘super-regional’ shopping centres. It has the highest retail conversion rate of any shopping centre in the country at 97%, according to its owners British Land. The centre currently has 295 stores and employs 7,200 people.

The refurbishment will include the installation of double height shop fronts, new signage, seating, lighting and lighting artwork, and is expected to be complete by the end of 2017.

New retailers recently opened at Meadowhall include The White Company, Jigsaw, White Stuff, Size? and Pretty Green.

“British Land is investing in assets across the retail portfolio to ensure centres such as Meadowhall reflect the way people shop today and in the future,” said Claire Barber, head of retail assets at the property group.
