Men's formalwear provides bright spot as weather impacts fashion sales at John Lewis

Men’s formalwear provided the only bright spot in what was an otherwise poor week for fashion sales at John Lewis as high summer fashion lines were impacted by the weather.

Fashion sales in the week ending May 28 fell 1.1% but men’s formalwear was up 25% compared to the previous year, achieving the best increase of any department in the fashion section of the business.

The retailer’s Never Knowingly Undersold price matching promotion helped handbags and some other fashion brands to achieve healthy increases in sales.

Overall sales at the department store chain were down 0.8% to £55m which the retailer described as a “credible result” when considered against the background of poor weather in the UK last week.
