Mild October hits clothing sales

The slowdown in retail sales continued on October, as total sales dropped 0.5% for three months to October 2018.

However, figures from the Office for National Statistics show that retail sales for October were up by 0.4% compared with September. Across all sectors there was 2.2% growth month on month.

Clothing, textile and footwear stores did not benefit from this uplift, however, and showed a 1% drop in the quantity bought during the month, and a 0.3% drop in the amount bought during the three months to October.

The unseasonably mild weather in October was blamed for this drop, as shoppers shunned winter clothing purchases.

Online retailing continued to perform strongly, and 18% of all retail is now online, up from 17.7% in September. Clothing stores reported that 18.2% of all sales are now online.
