Miles Gray joins Monkee Genes

Miles Gray, the former chief executive of Ben Sherman, has been appointed chairman of organic denim brand Monkee Genes.

Gray, who has more than 30 years experience in the young fashion sector, has invested an undisclosed amount in the brand, which is owned by founder Phil Wildbore.

Gray retired from Ben Sherman in February after 12 years at the business, during which time he helped progress it from a men’s shirt offer into a full lifestyle brand.

Gray told Drapers: “I was attracted to Monkee Genes because it’s a successful brand stocked in stores such as Topman and Topshop which are difficult to get into.”

Monkee Genes, which was founded in 2006 and is certified organic by the Soil Association, is sold in about 80 UK outlets.

Gray will drive Monkee Genes’s overseas strategy, which includes entering new markets such as the US, France, Russia and Scandinavia, and boosting its wholesale accounts in Germany from 40 to 250 withina year.
