More chances to win at Independents Awards

Independent Department Store and Niche Fashion Retailer are two new categories in the Drapers Independents Awards 2014, which were launched this week.

This year’s celebration of the best of indie fashion retailing has 15 categories in all. The new additions are designed to open the contest to even more businesses.

Drapers editorial director Eric Musgrave said: “We always want to keep the Drapers Independents Awards as inclusive as possible, while also keeping the number of categories at a manageable level.

“We are reviving the Independent Department Store category as there are a number of very good operators in this particular field. The new Niche Fashion Retailer category gives a chance to those smaller specialists, such as lingerie retailers, kidswear shops, bridalwear stores and so on that do not obviously fit into our main menswear and womenswear categories.”

The iconic Drapers Award itself has been made the central feature of this year’s marketing campaign.

“Picking one of those trophies up and displaying it in your store really puts your business on the national map,” said Musgrave. “The first step is to get your entry in.”

Drapers’ editorial team then draws up a shortlist of potential winners from all the entries and each of these businesses is visited by a Drapers staff member. From these, a list of finalists is compiled and a panel of expert industry judges selects the winners.

“To state the obvious, you have to be in it to win it,” said Musgrave. The Drapers Independents Awards will be presented at a celebratory lunch in London on Wednesday September 17.
