Morgan to shut UK retail operation

French young fashion brand Morgan is close its seven UK stores and 28 department store concessions.

Morgan said it would axe its retail operation to focus on growing wholesale sales in the UK.

Its department store concessions are in Debenhams, House of Fraser, Clerys and Lewis's.

The company said in a statement that it planned to grow its wholesale business via its licensing partners, department stores, mail order, multiples and smaller independents.

Richard Shetliffe, managing director of B-Brands, which has the footwear license for Morgan said he was committed to wholesaling Morgan footwear in the UK despite the store closures.

Shetliffe said: "We have an excellent wholesale business which is growing year on year. We are performing well at all levels of retail and in particular with mail order. Morgan footwear has become a strong and healthy business in its own right - with product and pricing that sits comfortably and performs well with all major customers. I am confident that the Morgan brand has good longevity and we will be working closely with the new clothing wholesale operation."
