Mountain Warehouse scales new peaks as profits climb

Pre-tax profits at outdoor retailer Mountain Warehouse grew 18% to £4.7m in the six months to 27 August, as it continued to open new stores in the UK and internationally.

First-half sales were up 19.3% to £91.6m, compared with the same period last year. International sales also saw a healthy increase, leaping by 50% and now accounting for 25% of the retailer’s revenue.

Mountain Warehouse opened 18 stores in the first half of this year, including in Crewe, Lyme Regis and Gosforth in the UK. It also expanded in Poland, Canada, and Ireland.

The retailer is also eyeing Holland and the Czech Republic as two new international markets for this year.

Online expansion has also continued apace. Internet sales were up 18.5% and Mountain Warehouse now operates country-specific websites in Australia, Canada, the US and Germany, amongst others.

The retailer is also rolling out sporty sister brand Zakti, which it launched two years ago, to Mountain Warehouse stores across the UK after it proved a hit with customers.

Another 10 Mountain Warehouse stores are planned to open before the end of this financial year, including Oxford and Southwold.
