MPs make surprise visit to Sports Direct warehouse

The MPs behind the damning report into working practices at Sports Direct made an unannounced visit to the retailer’s Shirebrook warehouse on Monday.

Iain Wright, chair of the business, innovation and skills select committee, visited the warehouse to check on progress made since Sports Direct’s founder, Mike Ashley, appeared before the MPs in parliament this summer.

The committee’s report in July concluded that Ashley – who is now also chief executive of Sports Direct – must be held accountable for the “appalling” working conditions and practices in its shops and warehouse.

At the time, Wright said the committee would “continue to hold Mr Ashley’s feet to the fire, in as constructive a manner as possible”.
