Marks & Spencer is the latest retailer to launch a spring clearance Sale and is offering up to 50% off its fashion collections.
The retailer slashed its prices across its stores and its website today and is offering a wide range of menswear, womenswear, kidswear and lingerie at vastly reduced prices. The Sale takes in all of M&S' sub-brands including Limited Collection and Autograph. Selected discounts are deeper than 50%.
Reductions include Limited Collection cropped jackets down to £15 from £45, metallic pinafore dresses down from £39.50 to £19 and selected Autograph cashmere jumpers down to £25 from £49.50. A Mark Powell dinner suit has been cut to £99 from £199.
A spokeswoman for M&S said that the mid-season Sale was "planned" and in line with the retailer's usual strategy around Easter dates. She said: "The date of the mid-season spring Sale changes every year but we always launch our mid-season Sale a couple of weeks before Easter. It has been the same policy for four of five years. The level of discounting is in line with last year"
The spokeswoman denied the retailer had stock issues and said: "I think there actually is slightly less stock going into the Sale than there was last year."
Andy Wade, analyst at Seymour Pearce said: "It's really difficult because of the timing of Easter to get a feel for the promotional calender but M&S is not alone. You have to give M&S the benefit of the doubt though - they know what has worked for them and they are sticking to that promotional calender. But it's no secret that trading for clothing retailers is very tough."
Debenhams, will join the spring discounters with a three-day Spring Spectacular later this week, offering reductions of up to 25%.
