M&S parachutes in new strategy director

Marks & Spencer has hired Melanie Smith in the newly created role of strategy director.

Smith, who will take up the role next week, will be responsible for overseeing growth opportunities at the business.

Smith has most recently acted as consultant to organisations including SAB Miller. Before this she worked as global marketing and strategy director at BUPA, and has held roles as executive director of operations and integration at TalkTalk and was a partner at strategy consultancy McKinsey.

A spokeswoman for M&S confirmed the appointment: “It’s a new role designed to look forward and develop future growth opportunities as we continue to recover the business.”

M&S posted a dive in pre-tax profits of 63.5% on 24 May, along with a 2.8% fall in clothing and home sales in the 52 weeks to 1 April. Its adjusted profit before tax declined by 10.3%.
