M&S to close Accrington clothing store

Marks & Spencer will close its store in Accrington, Lancashire, after 53 years.

The retailer said all 28 employees who work at the store at 23 Broadway have been offered jobs in a new M&S store due to open in nearby Rawtenstall this spring.

The new Rawtenstall store will be a Simply Food shop, unlike the M&S store in Accrington which offers both clothing and food. A spokesman for M&S said the new store is located approximately six miles away.

M&S will reveal its third quarter trading update on Thursday next week. It is expected to show improvements in clothing sales; however, problems with online delivery delays from its Castle Donington distribution centre are likely to have had an impact on overall trading over Christmas.
