M&S to launch new women's sub-brand

Marks & Spencer is to launch a new womenswear sub-brand next year to bridge the gap between Per Una and its Classics offer.

Speaking at the opening of the M&S Westfield London store, M&S executive director for clothing Kate Bostock said that the new brand, called Portfolio, would fill the gap in the customer offer on womenswear between the Per Una and Classics sub-brands.

She added that the Portfolio range would come in at a price point just below Autograph. It is understood that portfolio will target the 45 plus customer who likes to buy from co-ordinated ranges.

Portfolio will be launched to the fashion press in February 2009.

The news came as M&S opened a 103,000sq ft store at Westfield London Shopping centre in White City. The store features new treatments for the Limited Collection, Autograph, Per Una and the denim offer in both men's and women's wear. Footwear and accessories also have new look formats.

  • It's amazing that this market sector wasn't identified sooner, but now the M&S spotlight is on it, Gerry Weber et al (and their stockists) should start quaking in their boots. Will this be the precursor to the finale of the UK's "madam shops"?
