New culture secretary revealed

Maria Miller, an under-secretary at the Department of Work and Pensions, has taken the top job at the DCMS.

Miller replaces Jeremy Hunt as secretary for culture, media and sport as part of today’s cabinet reshuffle in which Hunt took on the Health remit.

Miller’s promotion from her current role as minister for disabled people takes her to cabinet for the first time since becoming an MP in 2005. She will also become minister for women and equalities.

The Basingstoke MP has beaten culture under-secretary Ed Vaizey to the top job in a surprise move. Vaizey, who has worked in the culture department since 2006, had been tipped for the DCMS post within the industry.

Miller has experience in the media sector following two spells at advertising agency Grey Advertising, as well as a four-year stint as a marketing manager at oil firm Texaco.
